We must involve the community in parks management to encourage ownership of our parks. This can be achieved by becoming a part of the consultative process by joining one of our National Parks Consultative Committees or becoming actively involved in parks and wildlife management through Friends of Parks Groups.
The Volunteer Support Unit, within the Agency, coordinates such groups. There are 141 Friends of Parks Groups throughout South Australia and seven Consultative Committees.
Any of these groups will welcome your membership and enquiries. Objectives include manual projects, fund-raising, educational/cultural events, social programs, and consultation between the community and the agency.
You will make new friends and will learn a great deal about parks and wildlife in your state.
Friends projects include: clerical/administration; wildlife projects; publications; information and displays; fund-raising; weed management; education; built heritage sites; photography; trails; research; guiding; and gardening.
Worldwide, the long term survival of the expanding national parks system is becoming more dependent on volunteer support and community involvement.

Volunteer Strategy: Success Through Partnership
For more than 25 years, we have worked with volunteers to maintain South Australia's natural and cultural heritage. As society changes, the face of volunteering changes too. By carefully planning for volunteer involvement, we can ensure its volunteer programs are sustainable, effective and relevant.
We are continuing to explore new ways to achieve success through partnerships and has become the first State Government department to develop a strategy for engaging with its volunteers. We value its diversity of volunteers and aims to utilise their skills and passions effectively.
Success Through Partnership: A Strategy for Volunteer Engagement (600Kb PDF), launched by the Minister for Environment and Conservation on International Volunteers Day, 5 December 2005, aimed to build on the success of current programs and to set the direction for a reinvigorated approach to volunteer engagement over the following five years.
